You may have clients with cognitive complaints that are typical of Post Concussion Syndrome, such as ongoing headaches, concentration difficulties, memory problems etc. Your client may have suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).  However, in many cases, especially with mild to moderate TBI, structural tests such as MRI’s and CT scans will come back as “normal”.  Similarly, a neuropsychological test may come back as “inconclusive”, citing failed symptom validity and/or effort validity tests, when the client’s injury is real.

The advantage of an fMRI assessment is that it provides direct and objective evidence of brain pathology. By comparing the brain function of your client to a large database, the analysis provides an objective, observable and scientific biomarker of brain pathology and dysfunction. The finding of a brain dysfunction is not an opinion, it is a statistical fact. This evidence will help your client prove or disprove the validity of their injury. 

BSDI sends its scan results for a computerized data analysis which provides a laboratory report. That report can then be reviewed by a medical expert who will opine on whether the results are consistent with a traumatic brain injury.
